Child and family health
Children are seen with a parent or carer present and, where they are old enough, are included in the conversation directly. Consultations cover new illness, growth and development questions, and follow-up of a previous problem. Explanations are given in plain language to both the adult and, where appropriate, the child.

What this covers
- Assessment of new illness in children
- Growth, feeding and development questions
- Follow-up after a previous appointment or hospital visit
- Advice for parents and carers on when to seek further care
- Referral onward where specialist paediatric input is needed
Preparing for the appointment
- 01
Note temperatures, fluids and nappies or toilet trips
Simple observations from the last day or two are often the most useful information in a child's assessment.
- 02
Bring the child's health record if you have one
Personal child health records, growth charts and immunisation records help place the current problem in context.
- 03
Bring something familiar
A favourite toy or book makes examination easier for younger children.
General information, not advice
This page describes how appointments in this area of care usually work. It is general information and cannot take account of your own history, so it is not a substitute for an individual consultation. If symptoms are severe or worsening quickly, seek urgent care; in an emergency, call your local emergency number.
