Mental and behavioural health
Mental health consultations are ordinary medical appointments. They begin with what has been happening, how long it has been going on and how it is affecting daily life. Options are discussed together, and onward referral is arranged where more specialised support is appropriate. This site does not provide crisis support. In an emergency, contact your local emergency number.

What this covers
- Low mood, anxiety, stress and sleep difficulty
- Review of existing treatment and how it is being tolerated
- Discussion of talking-therapy and support options
- Referral onward to specialist mental health services
- Coordination with physical health care where they interact
Preparing for the appointment
- 01
Note the timeline, not just the feeling
When things changed, what was happening around then, and what has helped or worsened it are the details that shape the plan.
- 02
You choose what to discuss
There is no requirement to describe anything you are not ready to. The appointment can move at your pace.
- 03
Bring a support person if you would like
Someone you trust can attend with you and stay for as much of the appointment as you want.
General information, not advice
This page describes how appointments in this area of care usually work. It is general information and cannot take account of your own history, so it is not a substitute for an individual consultation. If symptoms are severe or worsening quickly, seek urgent care; in an emergency, call your local emergency number.
