Physiotherapy and rehabilitation

A physiotherapy assessment looks at how a joint or muscle group moves, what provokes the symptom and what function has been lost. Treatment is generally a programme you carry out between sessions, adjusted at review. Progress depends on the condition and on the individual, and is discussed openly rather than promised.

What this covers

  • Assessment of musculoskeletal pain and restricted movement
  • Guided exercise programmes with scheduled review
  • Recovery support after injury or an operation
  • Advice on activity, posture and load management
  • Referral onward where imaging or specialist review is needed

Preparing for the appointment

  1. 01

Wear clothing you can move in

The assessment involves movement, so loose clothing that allows the affected area to be seen is helpful.

  2. 02

    Bring any imaging reports

Previous scans or reports help, though assessment is based mainly on how the area moves and behaves now.

  3. 03

Plan for the programme, not the session

Most improvement comes from what is done between appointments, so the plan is built around your week.

General information, not advice

This page describes how appointments in this area of care usually work. It is general information and cannot take account of your own history, so it is not a substitute for an individual consultation. If symptoms are severe or worsening quickly, seek urgent care; in an emergency, call your local emergency number.
